Hello! Welcome to Sacred Impressions! As an artist and student of theology, my goal for this blog is to provide a visual apparatus for appreciating art and understanding theological truth; hence the tagline: Art as an Apparatus for Theological Understanding.
I contend that art can function as a tool for visual exegesis, which means it is not the source of our theology. Rather, it visually expresses the process of interpreting Scripture and revealing the truths of God found within. Many posts will be devotional, but I aim to include significant theological research as well.
Christian art has often dealt with the disjunction between the sacred and the profane. The sacred is set apart for honoring the divine, while the profane is what exists in contempt of the divine. In this blog, I seek to highlight the sacred in works of art. Not all of the works I cover will be explicitly Christian, and for those, I will make a case for their sacredness.
As an artist, my work flows in tune with the Impressionist movement of the late 19th century. While my work is representational, it echoes the ethos of capturing a notion of what I witness in the world around me. In that sense, I have titled this blog Sacred Impressions. The works of art I will discuss depict only impressions of the truths found in Scripture concerning the attributes and works of God.
I hope you find this helpful in your walk with Christ.
